La Tigra

General Information

La Tigra National Park is to the northwest of Tegucigalpa, the capital city with an extension of 142.6 squared kilometers of tropical rain forest and wildlife reserve that supplies 30% of the cities water needs, providing us with a perfect place to practice ecotourism. There are 8 paths in La Tigra through which hikers can enjoy the exceptional flora and fauna in these mountains. It also has two especial places for its visitors; one in the Jutiapa zone with resting and bathrooms facilities. The other one is the Rosario Eco-shelter in the Rosario village, which used to belong to the Rosario Mining Company which extracted silver and gold. This is a modest mountain hotel that is located in the same building where the Company’s hospital functioned in the 1900s. You can spend the night here and enjoy nature and the historical mining culture of the place. The hotel meets all the camping requirements.

The highest point is at 7,513 feet above sea level so you can find many bird and mammal species. It is necessary to have a specialized guide so he/she can show you where to hike and appreciate the exuberant beauty in the park. It is important to note that along the way you’ll find caves and tunnels the mining company made over 100 years ago. They are signaled since many of them remain full of water. The most visited paths are El Bosque Nublado, La Esperanza, and la Cascada, even though there are five more paths.

The National Park is protected by the AMITIGRA foundation with headquarters in Tegucigalpa. The parks biodiversity gives you the chance to see the wonders of nature. La Tigra started its legal protection more than fifty years ago when on July 3, 1952 the San Juancito forest reserve was created. Later on, in 1966 the reserve’s area was increased to 75.71 squared kilometers. On July 14, 1080 it became Honduras’ first national park.

How do I get to La Tigra?

You can get to La Tigra by land from Tegucigalpa. There are two options, one is using the street that goes to El Picacho, which is paved until El Hatillo (about half way there), and takes you to the visitors’ center in Jutiapa. This road is 15 miles long and leaves you at the park’s entrance. The other road is using the road that goes to San Juancito, passing through Valle de Angeles. This road is about 23 miles long and is completely paved. From San Juancito you go up the mountain for one and a half mile until you reach Albergue El Rosario (El Rosario Eco-shelter). This part of the road can only be traveled by 4x4 cars. You can come and go on the same day to La Tigra and spend the night in a comfortable hotel in Tegucigalpa or you can stay in the shelter. Just call us so we can make the necessary arrangements for you since a reservation is needed because of the few available spaces.

If you’re planning to go back to ‘Tegus’ we recommend that you bring your own lunch and water for the day, dress comfortably and bring sturdy shoes. Don’t forget your camera since the landscape is breathtaking and you may even spot a White Tail Deer or a Quetzal atop a tree. There is a fee to pay for entering the park which depends on the visitor’s nationality.

If you wish to travel with us check the tour options to this area and if it doesn’t fit your needs call us so we can have the opportunity to prepare something you’ll like. Remember, La Tigra is the place where nature has created a miracle.

La Tigra National Park, just a few minutes away from Tegucigalpa, offers you the opportunity to make contact with nature itself with its broadleaf forest, considered a humankind heritage and fresh air supplier to the city…
