History and General Information
The Trujillo Bay area was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502 during his fourth and last trip and the town was founded on May 18, 1525. This was the first continental land in which he set foot and where the first Catholic Mass was offered in the mainland of the Americas.
Trujillo became one of the first capital cities in the New World, having an important economic activity that attracted English pirates in the area. The Santa Barbara Fortress, of which remains still stand, was built to protect the Spanish wealth in the area, and was open until William Walker; the American filibuster that came looking for adventure to Central America was captured and executed. Another important factor in the development of Trujillo was the arrival of the Garifunas who settled down in this coast.
This area was named after the hometown of its founding captain, the Spanish Francisco de las Casas, who came from a town with this name in the province of Caceres. Punta Caxinas, as it was originally called, due to its abundance in a fruit that has this name, became the first port in Honduras thanks to its broad and wide harbor. The bay also protected the ships from the open sea winds.
